"Should" was not a powerful motivator for Sherlock. His longer strides allowed him to catch up with John quickly. He wasn't about to let the chance to solve his own murder slip by. Because obviously it wasn't a suicide; he'd left too many delightful clues for it to be as simple as it seemed.
